Social and Family Programme
Physical medical care alone is not enough. Many victims of Agent Orange – like people with disabilities in general – are socially isolated and excluded from social life. That is why social and psychological support is just as important as physical medical care.
Another key source of support are day centres for children and young people with physical and/or mental disabilities who are unable to attend regular school. There they receive care, warm meals, lessons and therapy. Green Cross Switzerland supports facilities in Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Nam. This greatly relieves the burden on the families of those affected. Thanks to the day care centres, parents can work and have a chance to escape poverty. Some of those affected later find employment themselves as carers – an example of practical help for self-help.
To ensure sustainability, the day centres are also being structurally strengthened. Solar panels, for example, have a double effect: they provide environmentally friendly electricity and at the same time reduce operating costs, which means that more funds can be channelled directly into the care of children and young people. Renovations and the construction of new play and sports facilities also create a stable foundation that will benefit many generations of children and young people to come.
Since 2024, Green Cross has also been expanding its psychological and social support services. Together with its partner, Action to the Community Development Institute (ACDC), those affected are given individual support and specific support plans are developed for them.
One focus is on barrier-free living: doors are widened, handrails are installed, transitions are made step-free – small adjustments with a big impact. In addition, those affected are trained as peer counsellors. They pass on their experiences, accompany others on their way to a more self-determined life and advise families directly on site.
Psychological support is also particularly important. Many affected individuals suffer from anxiety disorders, depression or chronic stress. That is why, for example, our parent organisation, in collaboration with experienced specialists in Quang Tri province, has trained health workers who now offer professional support on site.
In addition, Green Cross supports measures to secure livelihoods, particularly in the agricultural sector. Families in which one or more members live with a disability and who are in precarious circumstances are trained and supported so that they can provide for themselves and earn a stable income.
