Past Projects
In peacetime, we advocate for people who were particularly affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Although this event occurred some time ago, it continues to have devastating consequences for people in the surrounding areas. In addition to the negative health effects (due to the released radioactivity), the accident also led to the social and economic devastation of the region.
For this reason, Green Cross Switzerland launched the SOCMED program (Social and Medical Care and Education) in 1995. In the context of the Chernobyl disaster, the program aims to provide medical, psychological, and social support to those who are particularly affected—especially children and young people—in order to achieve a lasting improvement in their living conditions.
Clean Drinking Water
Although there is sufficient water in Ukraine, the deliberate destruction of infrastructure means that the cleanliness of the drinking water can no longer be guaranteed. This poses a particular danger to children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. They are especially vulnerable to dangerous germs in the water and therefore have an increased risk of life-threatening consequences.
In 2022-23, Green Cross Switzerland equipped various public facilities near the front line in Kherson with systems for purifying heavily contaminated drinking water. For example, one unit was installed in the hospital kitchen in the city of Mykolaiv. This has provided enormous relief to the people affected in the war zone. Thanks to this assistance, tens of thousands of people now have access to clean drinking water.
